  • November 1, 2018 - December 15, 2018

For many, Maine’s health insurance marketplace will be the first stop when shopping for affordable coverage, and for good reason. When companies offer their plans through an exchange, they have to adhere to certain regulations and rules, which includes not being able to deny coverage or charge more based on medical history. So, if you or anyone on your policy has pre-existing or chronic health conditions that need to be covered, the marketplace may be the best place to start.

Maine’s health exchange is also where you can go to apply for government subsidies based on your income. If you’re in a tight spot financially, you also may be able to qualify for Medicaid, which you can apply for through the marketplace as well.

Is Health Insurance Mandatory In Maine?

Starting in 2019, health insurance in Maine will no longer be mandatory for residents. When the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) passed, it created a controversial piece of legislation known simply as the individual mandate. The mandate was put in place to help create a larger risk pool for federal and state marketplaces by requiring all Americans to have health coverage or face a tax penalty. The new legislation was wildly controversial, and faced fierce backlash from opponents of Obamacare, with some even calling it unconstitutional.

President Trump promised to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act when he was running for office. After a few unsuccessful attempts, he decided to take another approach to undermine the landmark healthcare legislation by signing an executive order eliminating the individual mandate. Some states fought back by creating their own versions of the mandate, but Maine was not one of those states.
