Is Health Insurance Mandatory In Utah?

No, starting in 2019, residents of Utah will no longer be required to have health insurance. When the Affordable Care Act was passed during Obama’s Presidency, it created the individual mandate. This mandate required all Americans to enroll in health coverage or face a penalty when tax season comes around, which was met with backlash from the GOP.

Once President Trump took office, he swiftly signed an executive order eliminating the individual mandate beginning in 2019. This was done in an effort to undermine the Affordable Care Act. Some states still did not agree with Trump’s decision, so they decided to create their own versions of the mandate to keep their marketplace alive and well. Utah was not one of those states.
